An annual gynecological exam is one of the best ways women can identify and prevent potential health issues. Regular health exams also help women create and maintain healthy habits.

At The Women’s Health Group, our priority is improving our patients’ health with annual gynecological exams. Our patient and compassionate providers are more than happy to walk you through the entire exam process and answer any questions.

How Often Should I Get a Gynecological Exam?

How often you receive a gynecological exam will depend on your age. Typically, women between the ages of 21 and 29 should receive an annual gynecologist exam regardless of whether they are sexually active. You can reduce your visits to every other year after you turn 30 if you have not experienced any complications and your pap smears come back normal.

Schedule an appointment with your gynecologist as soon as possible if you experience any of the following between yearly visits:

  • Changes in menstruation
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Unusual discharge
  • Odors or the development of an infection

What To Expect at Your Gynecological Exam

Before you begin your gynecological exam, your doctor may check your blood pressure or request a urine sample. Your urine sample will be tested for infections, pregnancy and your kidneys’ health. Your doctor may also perform a breast exam to check for lumps, nipple discharge and other abnormalities.

The next step of your gynecological exam is the pelvic exam. After changing into a dressing gown, you will lie down on the examination table with your knees apart. Your doctor will examine your external reproductive organs and insert a device called a speculum to open up your vagina and observe your internal organs, such as the cervix.

If you are due for a pap smear, your doctor will perform this test during your annual gynecological exam. During this procedure, your doctor will take a sample of your cervical cells to test for cancer. After your doctor receives this sample, they will remove the speculum, and you will change back into your clothes.
