When LGBT people have access to health care, many are discriminated against based on their sexual orientation and gender identity. Many LGBTQ people avoid healthcare for fear of discrimination, and studies show that more than a third of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ) people are unaware of the dangers of HIV / AIDS. People report experiencing discrimination, including discrimination in employment, housing, education, employment and other areas of their lives. Moreover, when many gay and lesbian people and their families move into care with a provider, studies have shown that they are not treated consistently with the respect that all patients deserve.
