Is MonaLisa Touch For Me?
Vaginal discomforts such as dryness, itching, burning and bladder leakage are all common symptoms that can occur during menopause or after child birth. The main cause of these symptoms is often Vaginal Atrophy (also known as atrophic vaginitis). Vaginal Atrophy is the thinning, drying and inflammation of the vaginal walls due to your body having less estrogen. Symptoms commonly occur at times of low estrogen such as during menopause and after childbirth. However, women of any age may experience these symptoms, and may possibly benefit from the MonaLisa Touch treatment.
MonaLisa Touch treatment is also used to treat certain vulvar conditions such as lichen sclerosis. It may also be an option for women with atrophy who prefer to avoid hormonal treatment or are unable to receive estrogen therapy due to estrogen-sensitive cancers.
There may be other treatments in addition to or instead of laser therapy that you may be offered. For this reason, it is important to work with an OBGYN physician to be sure you are getting the appropriate treatment for your symptoms. We encourage you to make an appointment with one of our OBGYN physicians to explore all of your options. Schedule Your Appointment
What Can I Expect?
MonaLisa Touch is a non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation treatment that uses a fractional CO2 laser to deliver micro-dots to the vaginal wall and external genitalia. This helps restore gynecological health by generating new collagen, elastin and vascularization resulting in immediate, long-lasting results. This in-office procedure takes only 5 minutes. There is no downtime and there are minimal side effects. Typically the course of treatment is 3 treatments every 6 weeks over an 18-week period with an annual maintenance treatment once a year. Additional treatments are determined by your physician.
Prior to the treatment, your Women’s Health Group physician will conduct a consultation to determine if you are a candidate for the MonaLisa Touch. During the consultation a vaginal exam will be performed to ensure there are no contraindications to performing this laser treatment. During each session, a topical anesthetic is applied to vulvar to prevent discomfort. After the area has numbed, a vaginal probe is inserted into the vagina and vulvar probe is directed at the vulvar delivering a gentle laser energy. Most patients describe this process as a mild vibration and painless.
